How to Choose a Supplement in the UAE: Testing, Dosages and Labels

Two supplements can sit side by side, list the same active ingredient, and deliver very different things.

The difference is usually visible on the label — if you know what to look at. This guide covers what to check and why it matters, including the checks that would count against products we sell.

1. Third-party lab testing

The most useful signal, and the most widely misrepresented.

What it means: an independent laboratory with no commercial stake has tested the finished product and confirmed it contains what the label says, at the stated potency, without contamination above safe limits.

What it does not mean: "lab tested" alone is close to meaningless — every manufacturer tests its own product. "Quality tested" and "purity guaranteed" have no defined standard behind them.

Look for the words third-party specifically, and ideally access to a Certificate of Analysis. A brand doing this properly will not hide it.

2. Dosage

A product can contain a well-researched ingredient and still do nothing, because the dose is a fraction of what studies used.

Read the Supplement Facts panel, not the front of the bottle. Then compare the amount per serving against the doses used in research on that ingredient. NMN trials, for example, have used 250–1,250mg daily. A product listing 50mg is not delivering a studied dose.

Check serving size too. "1000mg per serving" where a serving is four capsules is a different product from one delivering it in one.

3. Proprietary blends

"Proprietary Blend — 850mg" followed by an ingredient list with no individual amounts is a warning sign.

The stated reason is protecting a formula. The practical effect is that you cannot tell whether the blend is mostly the expensive active or mostly the cheap filler. Ingredients must be listed in descending order by weight — that is all you learn.

4. The form of the ingredient

Magnesium oxide and magnesium glycinate are both "magnesium", and they behave differently. The form is often more important than the headline number.

Absorption support is worth understanding critically. Resveratrol is poorly bioavailable — rapidly metabolised, leaving little unchanged compound in circulation. Piperine is frequently added on the basis of animal research showing improved exposure; a human trial did not confirm a bioavailability benefit. That does not make piperine pointless, but a brand claiming it "dramatically increases absorption" in humans is stating more than the evidence supports. Including our own — where our formulations contain piperine, it is included on preclinical grounds.

5. Where it is made

Look for GMP certification — Good Manufacturing Practice — covering facility hygiene, batch records, equipment calibration and quality control.

It is not evidence a product works. It is a reasonable floor for whether the contents match the label.

6. Claims that should make you cautious

Food supplements in most markets, including the UAE, may not be presented as treating or curing disease. Any product claiming to cure a condition or replace prescribed medication is either breaking those rules or stretching them.

Language worth noticing:

• "Clinically proven" — proven to do what, in whom, at what dose? Often the research is on one ingredient, not the finished product, and sometimes in animals rather than people.
• "Doctor formulated" — no defined standard behind it.
• Before-and-after imagery — easy to stage, rarely controlled.
• Guaranteed results — individual response varies, and reputable brands say so.
• A confident number with no source — if a brand tells you a specific percentage decline of something in your body with age, ask which study. Several widely quoted figures in the supplement industry trace back to no published measurement at all.

Careful language — supports, helps maintain, contributes to — is not evasion. It is a brand describing what the evidence actually supports.

7. Check whether animal research is being sold as human evidence

This is the most common sleight of hand in the category. A great deal of supplement science is in mice, cell cultures or isolated tissue. Results there frequently do not translate.

Watch for phrasing like "studies show" or "research demonstrates" without specifying the subjects. If a claim matters to your decision, it is worth finding whether the study was in humans, how many, and for how long.

8. Practical checks for buying in the UAE

• Who is the seller? A registered UAE entity with a physical address and reachable service is different from an anonymous marketplace listing.
• Is the returns policy clear? Most sellers accept only unopened returns — fair enough, but it should be stated plainly before you buy.
• Storage and shipping. Gulf summer temperatures are hard on some compounds. Long unrefrigerated transit is worth asking about.
• A real expiry date, not just a manufacture date.
